Template Builder guide
The template builder draws a fingerboard deck's outline, with its truck holes, from a few measurements. Download it as an SVG to print or as an STL to 3D print a router guide.
How to use it
- Type the measurements in the settings bar on the left (on a phone, open it with the button at the top left of the screen). The preview follows as you type. To change a value without typing, drag its label left or right; meanwhile, the handles it moves light up on the preview.
- Or drag the outline itself by its handles, shown unless you turn off "Show handles": the tips, the side points, the curves, the straight edges, the red tangents, and the cross at the center, which slides the whole outline along the truck holes. The fields follow as you drag.
- Check any warnings below the fields. They point out shapes that are allowed but probably not what you meant, such as truck holes outside the outline, and never block a download.
- Download the template as an SVG or an STL.
- "Share URL" copies a link to the template on screen; the address bar always holds the same link. "Reset" goes back to the default template.
Viewing it
- Zoom with the mouse wheel, a trackpad or two-finger pinch, or the buttons at the bottom right, and drag the background to move the preview around. "Fit to screen" brings it back to where it started.
- "Show N and T" marks the nose and the tail with an N and a T between their truck holes. They mark the template itself, so the SVG includes them while they're shown.
- "Show grid" draws a square grid over the whole screen, through the center of the board, 1 mm apart unless you change "Grid size" (0.1 to 20 mm; its arrow keys and its label step in quarter millimetres). Where the lines would be too close together on screen to tell apart, only every 2nd, 5th, 10th... one is drawn: zoom in to see them all. The grid is never in the downloads.
- "Lock handles to grid", shown with the grid, makes dragged handles land on it: the points on its crossings, the center cross on a line, the curves in whole grid steps.
None of this is part of the template or its link: this browser remembers whether the handles, the N and T and the grid are shown, the grid's size and its lock, and "Reset" leaves them as they are.
The fields
All values are in millimetres. A value outside a field's range is flagged, and the downloads stay off until it's fixed.
Deck
- Width
- The deck's width along its straight sides. From 7 to 120 mm. Default: 34 mm.
- Length
- The deck's length, from the nose tip to the tail tip. From 20 to 120 mm. Default: 96 mm.
- Wheelbase
- The distance between the two outer pairs of truck holes, the ones nearest each end. From 5 to 100 mm. Default: 55 mm.
- Nose-Tail Diff
- How much longer the nose is than the tail, with the truck holes staying where they are. Negative values make the tail the longer end. Dragging the cross at the center of the board sets it too. From -50 to 50 mm. Default: 0 mm.
- Holes Diameter
- The diameter of the truck holes. 0 leaves the holes out of the preview and of both downloads. From 0 to 5 mm. Default: 1.6 mm.
Nose
- Offset
- How far from the nose tip the straight side starts: where the nose curve meets it. From 0 to 100 mm. Default: 20 mm.
- Flat Tangent
- How long the nose curve keeps running along the straight side before it turns towards the tip. Longer makes a squarer shoulder. From 0 to 100 mm. Default: 10 mm.
- Tip Tangent
- How wide the nose stays at the tip before it curves away. Longer makes a squarer, blunter tip; 0 makes a point. From 0 to 100 mm. Default: 10 mm.
Tail
- Offset
- How far from the tail tip the straight side starts: where the tail curve meets it. From 0 to 100 mm. Default: 20 mm.
- Flat Tangent
- How long the tail curve keeps running along the straight side before it turns towards the tip. Longer makes a squarer shoulder. From 0 to 100 mm. Default: 10 mm.
- Tip Tangent
- How wide the tail stays at the tip before it curves away. Longer makes a squarer, blunter tip; 0 makes a point. From 0 to 100 mm. Default: 10 mm.
The nose and tail "Length" shown under their fields can't be edited: it is worked out from the fields above, as the distance from each tip to the nearest truck holes.
The drawing area is the ply the template is cut from, 45 × 110 mm. A deck that doesn't fit in it gets a warning.
Downloads
- SVG: the flat outline and the truck holes at real size, with the N and T while they're shown, for printing or as a reference. The handles and the grid are left out.
- STL: the outline 1 mm thick with the truck holes cut through, to 3D print as a router guide.
